The former vacant Empire Stores warehouse located on the east river waterfront in DUMBO was selected for redevelopment in September 2013 by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Within the walls of the new multi‐level, high‐end retail and office complex the Brooklyn Historical Society created a gallery/exhibit space to showcase the history of the waterfront, the social history of the neighborhood, and a range of environmental issues that face the Brooklyn Waterfront and its citizens today.

The project was an interior fit-out of one of the retail/office units, with the work including the installation of a dedicated lighting and humidity control system as well as a range of millwork, designed to complement the historical features of the former warehouse.

The Brooklyn Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) not‐for‐profit urban history center dedicated to preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn's extraordinary 400‐year history.
